DIY Weighted Tire Sled
What you are going to need
Getting a Tire:
The easiest and “free-est” way to get a tire is to your local tire show. They will most likely have a selection and will either give them away or only charge you a few dollars if it’s larger or still has some meat on the tires.
To connect your straps to the tire:
- Drill and Drill Bit or Screwdriver & Hammer
- Eyebolt
- Nut
- Washer
- 4 in spring link / carabiner
To connect your eye bolt, first take your drill and drill out a whole the size of your eye hook bolt. If you don’t have a drill you can use a screwdriver and hammer. Just use the hammer to drive the crew driver through the tire.
Then run the eyebolt through the hole you just created in the tire. With the “eye” on the outside of the tire. Then add your washer and nut then tighten the nuts on the inside and outside of the tire. Finally hook on your carabiner to the eyebolt and you and you are done!
Straps & Optional Belt:
- KEEPER 04228 36” x 2” Premium Axle Strap with D-Ring
- KEEPER (02606 10′ x 1″ Lift Sling, 1 Ply
- 1- 4 in spring link / carabiner
Just run the 10 foot sling through the carabiner so that the sling is even on both sides. To use the belt, connect the two ends of the 10 foot sling and the two ends of the 36″ sling using the carabiner and you are ready to rock. With the two slings you can find a lot of ways to use this DIY tire sled. Especially if you add the option weight platform below.
Tire Sled Weight platform:
- Saw
- 1 – 2″x4″x6′ Wood
- 8 – 2 3/4″ wood screws
- 4 – 1″ wood screws
- 1 – 1 1/2″ diameter pipe flange
- 1 – 10″ long 1 1/2″ diameter threaded pipe
Step one is to cut the 6′ piece of wood into 4 equal (18 inch) pieces. With these pieces you will be making an “I” where you have two pieces forming the center of the eye, and one each making the top and bottom cross sections. To start building your “I” you will first start by making a “T”.
To do this you will then lay two pies together making a rectangle and one piece across the top of two making a “T”. You will then screw the two boars into the top “T” piece of wood using the 2 3/4″ screws. Then take the “T and place it in your tire placing the top of “T” firmly against one side. Now take your one remaining loose piece of wood and place it inside the tire creating the “I” with both top bars firm against the tires walls. Now screw the base of the “T” to the bottom cross member to make your “I” within the tire.
Next we are going to add our pipe flange and pipe to hold the weights in place. Place the flange so that two of the four drill holes on the flange are in each of the pieces of wood making up the cross member. Now screw in the flange in s=using the four 3″ screws and then screw your pipe into the flange and you are done!
