Nathan SpeedShot Plus – 12oz Handheld Flask Review
There are a lot of options for brands and sizing when it comes to hand held flasks. And with Nathan being a brand that I trust, I decided to check out what they had to offer. Ending up at the SpeedShot Plus based on its 12oz sizing. They have few other size options, both larger and smaller, but for me 12oz offered the best storage (water and pocket) to weight ratio for running.
Fit wise the Nathan SpeedShot offers a comfortable hand loop and cinch strap that allows you to dial in the perfect tension. The attached pocket closes with a zipper and offers just enough room to fit in your keys, a couple GUs, and an energy bar. You definitely can’t fit your cell phone in the pocket.
For me the 12oz capacity has felt like plenty. Having tested the bottle on a few trails and road half marathon distance runs, it’s been just the right amount. And is very comfortable while running. But if you’re looking for something for long distance and ultra runs, you may want to jump up to a hydration vest.
Overall I really love the Nathan SpeedShot Plus and will probably continue to use it for my day to day runs until I find something better. But there are a couple of things I would like to see improved. The first thing I would love to see added in the future would be a key hook. I’ve had the zipper open slightly while running and have had my key fall out. Luckily I noticed it. But this could be fixed easily.
Conclusion
After racking up over 100 miles using the Nathan SpeedShot Plus on both the road and trail. I feel I can give this one two big thumbs up. I understand that some people want a larger pocket but I can’t imagine swinging my phone and a full water bottle in one hand while running. For me, the 12oz size and weight is perfect and the pocket has just enough room for some quick snacks. And I plan on using the SpeedShot Plus as my short to mid distance training runs going forward.
