Already incredibly popular in Europe, via ferratas are becoming more and more popular in the United states too. And as their popularity grows, so does the necessity for having the proper safety equipment. Enter the Black Diamond Iron Cruiser Via Ferrata Set. A great piece of gear from one of the most trusted brands in climbing.
We ended up purchasing a set of 4 Black Diamond Iron Cruisers for our trip to Colorado. To be used at the Ouray Via Ferrata and Telluride Via Ferrata. Both are accessible for free to the public as long as you have the right gear. So rather than pay $150 plus tip, per person for a via ferrata tour. We spent $120 per setup (we already had harnesses) to do both and have for future Europe trips. Here is how it worked out for us!

Black Diamond Iron Cruiser Review
Our set of Iron Cruisers showed up in plenty of time for our trip. And combined with our helmet and harness that we already had (great additions to your gear closet) we were ready to rock. So we packed up and made our way to Ridgeway Colorado. Located directly between the towns of Ouray and Telluride, and the two via ferrets we planned to do.
Our first trip breaking in the new lanyard system was at the Ouray Via Ferrata. The entrance for this course is free, but you must have a proper (non diy) ferrata system featuring a “screamer.” This is required to handle the forces generated on a vertical cable fall. Which can snap normal dynamic climbing rope. This is why you need a setup like the Black Diamond Iron Cruiser. So after a quick inspection we were on our way.
Once we hit the course it was clear that the Iron Cruiser is a great setup. The bungy extension on the clips and quick and easy click safety locks are amazing. Thankfully none of us had to use the screamer. But with the course featuring some large vertical climbs, we all felt really safe. Especially knowing we went with a well known brand, up to all current safety standards vs whatever you may get from a rando tour guide. And now we all have our setups for our next european via ferrata!
To me this was a great investment. Just doing the Ouray and Telluride courses more than paid for the setup. And I would highly recommend the Black Diamond Iron Cruiser Via Ferrata Set to anyone looking.
