In a time of 19:37:43, Jim Walmsley became the first US male to win the UTMB 100M. The first half of the race was a heated battle between Jim, Zack, and a few other runners who stayed in a close group for the initial part of the race. However, around km 140, Jim would shift into another gear, slowly and steadily separating himself from the other runners. By the time he reached the final aid station at La Flegere after the last climb, the race was all but his to lose. From there, he cruised into Chamonix, setting a new course record. This victory lifted a significant weight off his shoulders and set the stage for a potential showdown next year with the injured former champion, Killian Jornet.
