When the weather gets cold outside it’s hard enough to get motivated to run without having to worry about slipping in the snow or ice. But finding a set of microspikes that won’t affect your stride, while holding up the tough conditions can be tough. Thankfully over the last few years a couple brands have started making some great microspikes for running shoes. So let’s check out some of the best running microspikes on the market!
The Best Microspikes for Running
Fortunately this list is short and sweet. Within the trail and ultra running community there are only two brands you need to be looking at. And we’ve got them below listed below.
Kahtoola EXOspikes Footwear Traction
Price: $59.95

In my opinion the Kahtoola EXOspikes are the best microspikes for running on the market. And with a perfect 5 star rating. I’m not the only one that thinks that. Just read some of the reviews. Many people have switched from the other brand of spikes below to Kahtoola and have never looked back. They are lightweight, easy to get on and off, and have the best overall build quality on the market. Effective on ice, compact snow, and hard sidewalks. It’s surprising how little they affect your running stride. This comes from unique front to back carmob spokes and open webbing. Kahtoola makes a wide range of microspikes and crampons. But the ones you want to be looking at are the EXOspikes modal.
Yaktrax Run Traction Cleats for Running on Snow and Ice
Price: $40

One of the pioneers in microspikes that fit trail runners and hiking shoes. You can find Yaktrax at almost any running store or Walmart in a cold weather climate. Just make sure you get the box marked “Running”. Their hiking model comes in a very similar box but won’t work for running. The difference between their hiking and running model is the carbon spike located at the front of the foot. This is what makes them effective for running. And while I ran in Yaktrax for years, only having the carbon spikes at the front have their faults. They require very good running form and the back traction system just isn’t as effective as having full spikes (like on the Kahtoola). Yaktrax also has a reputation for not lasting longer than one season. This isn’t awful but you’d like to get a little more life out of them.
