Have you heard the news? There is a new race series being introduced, featuring three different styles of events. They are promising to be more than just trail running. But what is Double Black Events? And what type of events will they be offering? Holding their first events in 2022 but promising an extended 2023 series. There is still a bit of mystery surrounding some of the events. Including what they are and how they will run and be scored. Below is everything we know about Double Black Events so far. And how it compares to other fitness events
What is Double Black Events? Everything You Need to Know
Double Black Events is a new race series that is promising to more than just trail racing. With three different event types to be released over the next three years. The brand seems to have a well focused plan. Out of the three event types, the JET, ONYX, and CARBON, only the ONYX has had its full event details released.
Each of the events seems to incorporate trail running with another modality. The ONXY series includes running routes with or without sand bags for points. In 2023 they will be releasing the JET series which they say will be “trail running with a twist”. And in 2024 the CARBON series will feature trail running and barbells.
The first Double Black Event will be held in late 2022. And there have been no announcements yet about 2023 dates.

Double Black Event Types
JET –
A classic trail race with a unique twist.
The JET series and event details will be released in 2023
ONYX –
Sandbags, Flags, Trails, & Points (Available Now)
The ONYX series is a mix of trail running and sandbag carries (if you choose). The point system works like this. You have multiple courses of different distances and difficulties. Completing each route is worth a certain amount of points. And if you choose to take the sandbag, the route is worth a multiplier (route points X bag multiplier) to make it worth even more. You have a set amount of time to complete as many routes as possible. You can see a sample ONYC course taken from their Arizona event below.
Length: 4 Hour (Full) & 2 Hour (Half)
Price: Full – $140 & Half – $95
CARBON –
Barbells and Trails (Coming 2024)
The CARBON series and event details will be released in 2024
Awards & Age Groups
As of writing this article they have not released any information on awards or any prize money. I imagine that they will have some sort of awards for the top 3 male and female racers. And based on the following post from Double Black Events showing age group breakdowns. I expect age group awards will be happening too.

Conclusion
Every few years a new type of event or race series is introduced. With some, like Spartan Race, Ragnar, and HYROX even becoming large industry players. And many others that fall along the way. How will Double Black Events fare in this highly competitive market? I feel that as long as they hold quality events, support the fitness community, and manage growth at a reasonable (sustainable) pace, there is always more room for a new fitness events series. I’ll be rooting for them. And hopefully will get a chance to come out to one of their 2023 events.
If you have a chance to check out one of their new events, let me know in the comments!
