If you’re looking for trail running apps then you have come to the right place. Below is a list of everything you will need to find trails, track your runs, and more. Better yet, they are all free and available for both Apple and Android. If you have an app you think should be on the list, let me know in the comments below. Now let’s check out the apps that every trailer runner needs to have on their phones.
Trail Running apps Every Runner Needs
All Trails
Why you need it:
Finding new trails, reviews, trail beta, photos, and more.
Description:
One of the most popular apps in both the trail running and hiking communities. Alltrails has pretty much become the go to for people when it comes to finding new trails and leaving trail reviews. With an extensive database of trails worldwide, extensive filtering, trailhead direction, community reviews, photos and much more. It really has become one of the most useful places to plan your next adventure and get insider trail beta.
Google Maps
Why you need it:
Getting to the trails head and downloading maps.
Description:
This one may seem obvious but Google maps can be very helpful beyond just getting you to the trail head. Although that alone would be reason enough for appearing on this list. The reason real reason for it being here is for the ability to download maps to be used offline or without service. This is a great feature to use in areas with little or no service. Which is often where the best trails are!
Strava
Why you need it:
Track your runs, running stats, share and follow other runners.
Description:
If it isn’t on Strava, it didn’t happen. This is a joke obviously, but one that is very common in the trail running groups. Stava allows you to track your workouts, provide analytics, and follow some of the best runners in the world. That’s right, many of the best runners in the world track their training runs and share them publicly on Stava. While a lot of the more popular features have been changed to “premium,” the free version is still by far the most used run tracker in the world.
Trail Run Project
Why you need it:
Finding trail runs that connect multiple trails and popular courses.
Description:
One of the apps that deserves a lot more recognition. The Trail Run Project is pretty much Alltrail but for running routes and popular race courses. To elaborate, while Alltrails shows you single trails, the Trail Run Project shows you popular routes that often connect multiple trails together. And will allow you to run popular and well known courses (think Leadville, Western States, ect). Many smaller race directors are loading their courses here too.
